What?

 What violet light

Blazes bright

In inky night

Behind eyes shut tight?

What chord keeps

Striking a melody sweet,

With incessant chorus deep

No voice, No hand, and

No instrument to beat?

It's that - singular infinite

conscious I

Which encompasses

All conceivable & perceivable

forms & phases of mortal sighs-

Recycles this chaos to order

Giving melody and light

For my earthly delight

काव्य?

 हल्की हल्की सी हवा

सहमी सहमी सी शरद

हाथ में चाय का प्याला

और दबा दबा सा दर्द

Today

 My sky is blue

No rains, or clouds

Passing through

No sunrise, no sunset

To mar my way

Azure eons fly

In stillness of today

No darkness, no light

Just illumined openness

Of infinite sight.

-------

Choppy mountain waves,

With edges of icy lace

Tumbling like my days

And a heart that never behaves.

------

Sweeping indigo shadow lines -

Unfolding wings in endless flight?

Or Sumi hills in dusky light?

Reflection in these silent times.

Revealed in Dark

 Sitting in a candle's glow

Deepening darkness, evening slow

Sea murmuring nearby

Stars glittering in the sky.

Rapt in candle's dancing flame

Frogs crooning their mating game

Cicadas chorus, night's awake

Fragrance filled - this haunting ache.

Leaning forward, I blow off the light

Nature's revealed in a Prussian sight

Pain's soothed - a mere attachment to glow

At ease in dark, and timeless eons flow.

I Just close my eyes

 I just close my eyes

To space-travel inside

Swirling lights of blue and gold

Many mysterious sights unfold

Zooming past gazillion stars

Swinging around a centre far

Milky Way is too small for me

Rushing past there's much to see

Annihilating galaxies, jet-streams and more

Endless joys of Cosmic allure

Moving towards a source unknown

Going past a no-return zone

Crossing boundaries of space-time

Fractal structures govern its paradigm

Veils of darkness hiding that Light

Eternally burning bright, Inside.

Creation

This heartbreak is your gift to me

I couldn't grow in dullness of complacency.

Nor break in cycles, shattering into pieces

For alchemy's distillation to purer reaches.

Only dark winters fulfill spring's abundance,

And, pain's a requisite for transcendence.

Entropy's dissolution kindles all deflagration

Into music, dance, and colours of creation.

2 more haikus

Withered twigs, now tipped with Earth's fire, first hints of spring.

---

Winter silence, endless bamboo sonatas, shishi-odoshi

Pecan pie

 Your love for me

is like that pecan pie, in

embedded memories that I

claw with aged faithless fingers,

to bring back, a taste

of youth, delectably poised,

at the edge of my tongue -

Of shared life, warmth, and

our love's promise carried

in my womb.

Words

I shall not measure my day
Chart it's course, Or
Analyse whether it's better
Than my yesterday

I choose instead to drown
In my sorrows,
slowly skin the pain -
Experience its horrors!

Or delight in elation
Of free flight
Over rainbows bright
Unhindered -
No horizon in sight.

To Be, to breathe - ALive,
this moment's my ultimate High,
I Leave books and charts to scholars,
And follow the lute of wise.
------------
Bereft, without a
hand to hold -
I reached to skies,
Light streamed, wrapping
My fingers.
I reached into water
She laughed, with a cooling hold.
I reached to winds
Who played, caressing
with a lover's touch.
Loved thus,
I resumed my journey -
Ahead.

a little haiku

Sea breeze & Sumi nights
Sitar strains on dancing palms
My ancient-young heart.

Devouring Light

Be still, invisible - watch.

It's a Feast day of creation
Giant cauldrons cook up
Light
flooding empty aeons with sight.

Earth suckles with greedy gulps
Dancing cells in verdant green reaching up

Oceans devour light, rising to sky
Nights leave star crumbs behind.

And I, a Light-child, grow luminous wings and soar,
Sitting still circle Cosmos million times or more

Green Star

If the Sun were not green
Would Earth be blanketed in verdant shades and sheen?

If Sun were not green
Would our sky be blue
And stain the Oceans in similar hue?

This miracle of malachite and jades,
cobalts, indigo and ultramarine shades,
pirouettes in Sama* at a dizzying pace**
In zikr on an Eternal course,
A tiny green Star - its Supreme Source.

------

*Sama = Sama is a Sufi ceremony performed as part of the meditation and prayer practice dhikr/zikr. Sama means "listening", while dhikr means "remembrance".

**30 km/s earth around sun

Some Poems

For all those who died -

Many thousands more tried,

Standing on the edge; A void

of colour and light

To step back into bleak & grey

To live yet another day

Of futility and fight.

If music is in silence -

Rythm is in form,

Melodies are made of color &

Moods dance in shadows of light.

Snail atop a high wall

Conquest of its Everest?

A flick, it flies down.

Dark night, crickets cry

Stars circle silently,

Some fall down, becoming fireflies.

A tall swing sways

Between high palms,

An old woman swings

Singing wavery psalms.

Yog or Union

Today I sat
on the floor,
at a threshold-
crossing thin vertical space
the door to my garden,
inside and out,
both within and without
shedding my past
and without a future,
balanced and poised
erect and at ease
still and silent,
perfecting my Yog,
a union
of my body,
with my mind/spirit -
to lose it all.

And, ridding my mind -
my mind soared.

Morning Moods

I am a big fan of many things Japanese.  And, Haiku - a poetic form of 5-7-5 syllables which 'captures' moments-moods, embedded within seasons, nature, and space, with a briefest rhythm of words, tops my charts as quintessentially the best in Japanese Zen expression. Of course, the language itself lends naturally to the emergence of this poetic form with their enormous mood-vocabulary expressed in briefest inter-connected mono-syllables.

For my month in Kyoto, I promised myself an attempt to do at least one haiku every day. Most days, I sit immediately after my morning coffee, looking out into forests that roll steeply down hill and try to think of words that express the moment. Morning Moods compiles this attempt so far, to express a mood-moments without complying to a strict rigor on the syllable rhythm - challenging to do in English. I have used Japanese seasons words, as a guide, where I could.

Summer departs,
mists descends down hills, forests,
wrapping my new day.

momiji-gari (display of autumn leaves)
fiery colors ablaze within-
my autumn age.

Awaiting Koyo (display of autumn leaves)
no sign of Kitsusuki (woodpecker - autumn signature)
restless in Kyoto                                                                                      --3/10/17

Transparent cool days
Hints of fire in green forests
will I miss Koyo?

Golden harvest moon,
shibori clouds on indigo-
Kumano Jinja Mae ( a temple)                                                              --4/10/17

Hatsu Akashi (first autumn storm)
in reverence, trees bow low
rain drenched earth.                                                                                --6/10/17

Rain gusts billow mists
swathe tall cedars in pashminas
silence is now fragrant.                                                                                   --7/10/17

Watery sunshine
mists rise amongst Hinoki (Japanese cedar)
Earth lights incense to day                                                                             --8/10/17

Eye-doors shut; I dream,
play, sing, and dance - all within;
bird songs from afar.

Warm, and sunny days
Koyo in Kyoto distant,
clear heart, I still smile                                                                         --9/10/17

Doors open, butterfly
flew inside, and cicada
chirped under my bed.

Aki-no-ame (autumn rain)
scraps of sky litter the ground,
suns ablaze all around.                                                                       --10/10/17

In bed, wondering
to read, to paint or to sing
days pass, seasons change.

A fall fly flies in,
finds food, warmth, my nose to perch,
who will move first?                                                                         --11/10/17

Still a week away,
Kurama himatsuri (fire festival in Kurama),
Forest flames kindle.

night rains, morning mists,
lonely birdcall from forests
I sit still, aware                                                                                 --12/10/17

Aki-no-sora (intense blue autumn sky)
washed over by red-gold dusk,
Geese fly south over Kamo(river)

Incessant misty rains,
dark clouds blanket the forests
- a piercing shika scream (mating call of small deer in autumn)     --13/10/17

watercolor dawn,
softly washed land and sky
birds chorus in song.

waning harvest moon
dark Sumi nights, I sit, (Sumi = charcoal ink)
within my Enso.

Two inter-twined lives
irrelevant chains in space-time
part of cosmic mandala.                                                               --14/10/17

Dark green forest-hills
loom over golden paddy
feast days for sparrows.                                                               --15/10/17

aki-no-koe shinryoo( autumn rains, new cool)
forests wrapped in wreathes of mists
pine and cedar's fragrance.                                                          --16/10/17

More Musings....

Anchored on the sea floor
Dancing like a kelp
Fish swim through me,
Octopus cling to my back.

An Exodus?
Army of hermit crabs
Climbing up a slippery rock.

New moon night
I walk in light of a million stars.
Long wispy clouds ribbon out
- our Milky Way.

Lying on the sand and staring up-
Core of the Milky Way, gigantic, and
illuminated from within;
250 million years for our Sun to whiz
around that 800,000 km/hr!
I am a mere cosmic speck - I smile.

I swim, tread, facing a large wave
Trying to catch it right-
Leap at the last instant
To ride its crest, or dive deep in
To miss it's crash -
Playing with the ocean...
Thoughts meander and
I am whacked, tossed,
Flung and taught -
It is all about No Mind.

Could I live like this?
For my remaining Forever?
Eat, sleep, walk, play and sway
On my blue hammock,
Staring at the azure sky, turquoise sea
Under dense canopy of giant evergreens? What will I miss:
Can't think - No mind.

I worry - do I need little
Because I have too much.

I dive deep towards the ocean bed
Emptying out my lungs -
Crystal bubbles stream up.
So also in my inner search
Will have to let go, to dive deep.

Musings...

Today, ocean flew up
To land as scraps
on a flowering Didu...
Three kingfishers on a branch.

The ocean has stained me blue
I wade out to do my peacock dance
And in distance, megh rumble.

Like crabs, I run sideways
Along froth lines,
Searching for treasures
Tossed from the sea.
...and so also in life
I skirt, afraid to dive deep.

Moon waxes and wanes,
Tides tumble in cycles;
Earth hurtles through star fields.
Sitting still, I watch and laugh -
that I still seek a purpose!

When all voices die -
Will the silence in my head
Pound like waves,
And my blood
Course in crazy dance?

Sitting by the shore
I ignore the ocean;
A crashing wave drenches me
For my audacity...
I smile and return my gaze
Towards him.

Here, the Didu is light pink.
Wild almond is golden, red and russet;
Most are in shades of dark evergreen; and some are just barren and brave.
I too sport all seasons of my life - subdued spring of blushing pink; summer strength of vital greens;  fiery shades of autumn's passion, and coolness of winter nights.
It's all the same - without and within.

Dewdrop

Been in despair...
stuck and sucked
in life's quicksand
of weary care.

Groped for help
here and there,
on internet, books,
with strangers to share.

Sat wretched at a door
when my gaze spied,
a dewdrop on a leaf
was in sight.

Tiny, ephemeral,
suspended and slight,
contained, complete
and lit from inside.

Wings unfolded,
my heart took to flight,
soared far and high
till I was out of sight.

On Death

Death,
is only a
breath,
away.

when i die
who will cry?
why?

Memories
erased,
death
debased

die,
to be-
alive

honor the dead?
we don't honor
the living.

Death
finally..
now I'll sleep.

i agree-
die
to be free.

F***
death, life
and purgatory.
